Chair of Public Law, European Economic Law, and Legal Philosophy

Professor Dr Michael W Müller, M.A., LL.M. (Cambridge)
Professor Michael W. Mueller has held the Chair of Public Law and European Economic Law (since February 2025: Chair of Public Law, European Economic Law and Legal Philosophy) at the University of Mannheim since September 2024. From 2026 on, he will serve as an acting co-spokesperson of the University’s Research Focus Area „Inequality, Democracy, and Public Interest“. He is a co-principal investigator of the joint research project „Democratic Fiscal Policy in Transformational Times“, funded by the Volkswagen Foundation (2025–2030). He has advised governments at federal and state level and participated in parliamentary hearings, mainly on questions of public finance and on legal aspects of digitalisation.
Michael Mueller studied law and philosophy in Munich as a scholarship holder of the German National Academic Foundation. Moreover, he holds an Academy Diploma in European Union Law from the European University Institute in Florence, and an LLM from the University of Cambridge (Wolfson College). He was a visiting scholar at the University of Cambridge, Duke Law School, Harvard Law School, the European University Institute, and Renmin University of China in Beijing, as well as a researcher in residence at LMU Munich’s Center for Advanced Studies. Before joining Mannheim faculty as a junior professor in 2022, Michael Mueller has been an academic assistant to Professor Stefan Korioth at LMU Munich. In 2024, he declined an offer for a Chair of Public Law with a focus on Economic Law at Chemnitz University of Technology.
Professor Mueller is chairman of the University's election board, a member of the selection committees of the German National Academic Foundation (student support, Bucerius Law Programme) and chairman of the ethics committee of the German Table Tennis Association.
