Considering the threats that human activity poses to the natural foundations of life, it is astonishing that there has not yet been an overarching approach in legal theory encompassing both – the human being with its needs and its dependent relationship with the surrounding environment.
With the Law & Nature project, which is funded by the VolkswagenStiftung, Prof. Dr. Birgit Peters (University Trier) and Prof. Dr. Nils Schaks are investigating the extent to which a new jurisprudential approach can be formulated. Nature conservation and environmental protection should be the starting point for consideration without giving up democratic and fundamental freedoms.
An international English speaking conference on the subject was held at the University of Mannheim on the 21st and 22nd of September.
